Power of Place Life Coaching Durango Colorado

Located in Durango, Colorado, the Western Slope Institute is dedicated to promoting sustainable and regenerative practices. Our primary focus is on socio-ecological systems, which examine the interrelationships between nature and society. We believe that by collaborating with individuals, communities, and organizations, we can create positive and lasting changes for both people and the planet.

Our goal is to develop innovative approaches that enhance the health and vitality of Southwest Colorado. Our community-based approach provides a unique opportunity for all stakeholders to participate in shaping the future. We offer a wide range of services, including regenerative education programs for young adults, consulting services, and research initiatives. Together, these components contribute to a comprehensive approach to regional regeneration.

Regenerative education
The Western Slope Institute offers immersive 8-week and 16-week Gap-Semester programs for young adults ages 18–24, blending remote, hybrid, and in-person learning experiences. These programs are rooted in the principles of regenerative design, sustainable living, and ecological literacy, and they provide participants with meaningful, hands-on opportunities to engage in place-based projects and cross-cultural service learning. Whether exploring food systems, land stewardship, community resilience, or environmental justice, students are challenged to think critically, live intentionally, and contribute meaningfully to the communities they serve. Designed for those seeking purpose-driven education and transformational growth, our programs foster leadership, collaboration, and a deep sense of connection—to self, others, and the natural world.

Consulting

We offer tailored consulting services designed to support organizations and institutions in adopting regenerative practices and principles. Our approach is rooted in deep collaboration, systems thinking, and place-based solutions that align with ecological health, social equity, and long-term resilience. Whether you're looking to redesign organizational systems, or embed regenerative practices into your culture and operations, we work closely with your team to co-create strategies that are practical, impactful, and future-focused. Our goal is not only to minimize harm, but to help your organization become a positive force for regeneration in your community and beyond.

research

The Western Slope Institute works to expand the fields of socio-ecological systems and bioregional regeneration research which aims to understand the intricate connections between human societies and the environment.  The Western Slope Institute work is based on the regenerative development and design principles and methodology put forth by Mang and  Haggard (2016), Mang and Reed (2012), the field of Sustainability Education, and Socio-ecological Systems research conducted by Dr. Biederman throughout the Animas River Watershed.  This research includes identifying, refining, and measuring regenerative social and ecological indicators within a watershed as well as longitudinal studies on the impacts of ongoing regenerative projects with our various local partners on the health and vitality of the bioregion.

Young Adult  Programs are based on Dr. Biederman's research and development of the Regenerative Socio-ecological Systems Framework

This is an overview of the recommendations from the research.
